WWE WrestleMania 33: Goldberg Defending WWE Universal Title vs. Brock Lesnar

With Goldberg defeat of Kevin Owens on Sunday night at WWE Fastlane, his match with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 33 will be for the WWE Universal title.

In order for the third bout between Goldberg and Brock Lesnar to be worthy of the main-event at WrestleMania 33, there needed to be something added to the match.

The past two matches between Golberg and Lesnar can only be described as disappointments. At WrestleMania 20, both Goldberg and Lesnar were leaving the company afterwards and that led a match that was poorly received by the crowd. At Survivor Series this past fall, Goldberg defeated Lesnar in less than two minutes. While exciting to see, the outcome of the Survivor Series match was questionable to say the least.

With both matches failing to live up to expectations, why would WWE go to the well once more and think that the match could main event their biggest show of the year?

It’s clear that WWE is building up Lesnar to eventually be conquered. While Lesnar has blurred the line between a face and heel over the course of the past year, his booking since SummerSlam has been as a clear heel. The end-game for WWE is to  have their next top face conquer Lesnar and end his reign of carnage.

Goldberg, till this point, has played a pivotal part in that process. Beginning with his return at Survivor Series, Goldberg has been extremely over with the WWE Universe. After his easy victory over Lesnar at Survivor Series and, consequent, easy elimination of the Beast Incarnate at the Royal Rumble, Goldberg’s hype train has gone to incredible lengths. The hype continued to build on Sunday night with Goldberg defeating Kevin Owens at Fastlane and claiming the WWE Universal title.

And, that is how WWE saved the third and final match between Lesnar and Goldberg. As WWE Universal champion, Goldberg will undoubtedly be over with the WWE Universe. Chants of “Goooooooooldberg” will dominate WWE programming between now and WrestleMania 33. With the help of Paul Heyman, fans will be clamoring to see “Gooooooooldberg” defend the WWE Unviersal title at WrestleMania 33 against Lesnar. And, WrestleMania 33 will be when the Goldberg train comes to a crashing halt. Lesnar will go over Goldberg at WrestleMania 33 and reclaim his status as the top heel in the company while holding the WWE Universal title.

Having the WWE Universal title added to the match between Lesnar and Goldberg at WrestleMania 33 was a necessary evil. WWE has an end-game in sight with Lesnar and that involves him ending the Goldberg craze while capturing the WWE Universal title.

The third match between Lesnar and Goldberg needed insurance in order to be worthy of the main-event at WrestleMania 33. The WWE Universal title provides that insurance.
