WWE WrestleMania 33: Neither Goldberg or Brock Lesnar Should Be Champion After the Show

Goldberg will defend the WWE Universal Title against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 33, but neither man should be champ when all is said and done.

Oh no. The conclusion to WWE Fastlane ended in the worst way possible, at least to those who have been paying attention the last few years. Universal Champion Kevin Owens lost, in record fashion, his title to Goldberg, who looked winded just walking down to the ring. While that was sad enough, it also meant the WrestleMania 33 main event would be between Goldberg and Brock Lesnar for the Universal Title.

This is no good. No good at all.

WWE has been down this road before. Goldberg and Lesnar are part-timers, and it’s bad enough they are taking the biggest match of the year from guys who bust their ass week in and week out while they show up once a month to pick up their check. We’re also faced with the prospect of having another part-time champion, just as we did when Lesnar held the gold three years ago. Remember that? Of his 224-day reign, Lesnar showed up to work for like 20 days, and WWE TV often went weeks or months without the title appearing.

Anybody ready for the bad ol’ days to return?

There’s still plenty of time between now and WrestleMania for things to change. Kevin Owens likely won’t be in the mix as he feuds with Chris Jericho, but something else could happen. The best solution is to have whoever wins the Money in the Bank cash-in the briefcase immediately. I mean, Goldberg and Lesnar are guaranteed an absolutely brutal 4-minute match and will be exhausted afterward, ripe for the picking.

In Lesnar’s case, there is precedent, since Seth Rollins already pulled this stunt on him at WrestleMania 31. The next night Lesnar flipped out and got suspended indefinitely; I can see the same sort of scenario playing out. And if it’s Goldberg who is the champ, he’ll be ill-prepared for an MITB cash-in having not been around for a dozen years.

MORE FROM DAILY DDT:

Whatever happens, WWE can’t let Goldberg or Lesnar walk out of Wrestlemania 33 as champion. Something tells me Finn Balor will enter this equation at some point, possibly as the MITB briefcase holder, but it doesn’t matter. WrestleMania is the time when WWE resets for the next year’s worth of storylines, and none of them should include Goldberg or Lesnar with Raw’s red belt around their waist.
