As Fastlane came to a close, the WWE Universe got to witness Goldberg win his third world championship. Destroying Kevin Owens in just twenty-two seconds, he sent a clear message that his recent dominance wasn’t just a matter of luck. All it took was one spear and one Jackhammer, and Goldberg stood victorious once again.
Regardless of how fans feel about the result, it can’t be denied that having Goldberg wearing the belt is “best for business”. Although it’s too early to measure the impact of this victory, one thing to expect is for old eyes to be drawn to the product.
In professional wrestling, an immersive and strong storyline is just as important as solid in-ring work. Ever since he returned to WWE, Goldberg has made it clear that he wants to be a superhero for all the children watching the product. No matter the obstacle, the veteran has managed to stand tall, cementing that belief to the fans
Whether this goes down as the greatest title reign in Goldberg’s career or not, the prestige that he’s instilled in the Universal Championship will be crucial going forward. Eventually, someone is going to come along and defeat him, and when that happens their reward will be two-fold. First, they will be able to carry the momentum that comes with beating a top-tier superstar like Goldberg. Second, they will acquire a Universal Championship that actually means something.
Since it’s inception at SummerSlam, the belt has not been seen in the same light as the WWE Championship. Men such as Goldberg will help to raise the value of the title, benefitting all the boys in the back.
