6. Asuka Debuts

The SmackDown Women’s Championship is being put on the line against “every available contender” at WrestleMania 33. Becky Lynch, Carmella, Mickie James, and Natalya are already confirmed participants. However, the words “every available” should spark some intrigue. That could lead to new and old faces returning, including Emma, Summer Rae and even names from the past.

Someone fans shouldn’t expect is Asuka. While she would be an exciting addition to the match and for SmackDown Live, calling her up isn’t the best idea, for now.

Asuka arriving in this match could make her look like just another competitor. She’ll be in the ring with plenty of talented women, but will have trouble standing out amongst the pack. Especially if this is a one-off, like NXT did with Hideo Itami in 2015, there’s little reason to subject her to main roster exposure in a meaningless way at the biggest show of the year.

The Empress is also needed in NXT, which is struggling to find its footing. She’s the head of the Women’s Division (by far), and has a presence that can’t be replaced by anyone else on their roster. Ember Moon, Ruby Riot, Peyton Royce and others have potential, but it’s difficult to replace someone that’s led the NXT Women’s Division for one full year.

Asuka debuting at WrestleMania doesn’t make sense. Give her, her own spotlight and see what happens afterward.
