The WWE officially announced that Austin Aries was released from his contract on Friday evening.

Austin Aries debuted for the WWE in 2016, joining NXT. He became part of the company after spending years in TNA and ROH.

When the WWE created 205 Live in November 2016, they brought up Austin Aries, to use him as a commentator. He stayed in this role until the spring of 2017, joining the roster and competing for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship.

However, on Friday night, Aries’ time in WWE ended. The company announced his official release in a statement on WWE.com.

"“WWE has come to terms on the release of WWE Superstar Austin Aries. WWE wishes Aries the best in all of his future endeavors.”"

This comes after Aries’ last WWE appearance, which was at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view. He lost a Cruiserweight Championship match to Neville, ending their feud at two months.

Aries lasted on the main roster, as a wrestler, from March to July. This saw him compete for the Cruiserweight Championship at three pay-per-views, including WrestleMania 33. Each match saw the Greatest Man That Ever Lived lose, before his disappearance from 205 Live after Extreme Rules.

It’s unknown what led to Aries’ release. Little to nothing was rumored about his status, so the timing of this news was interesting.

Aries recently published a book, called “Food Fight: My Plant-Powered Journey From The Bingo Halls To The Big Time.” It came out shortly after his last WWE TV match.
