The important of the NJPW G1 Climax shows.
The busiest time of the year for New Japan Pro Wrestling has arrived once again. The 27th G1 Climax, the premier tournament in pro wrestling, has kicked off with a bang. The tournament began on July 17 and will conclude on August 13 in what will be a string of 19 events in 28 days. The month long epic has been home to such legends as Inoki, Rhodes, Hansen, Andre, Vader, and Hogan. In 2017 the NJPW G1 is an event that can set a wrestler’s career on a trajectory like nothing else.
With a history dating back to 1974, the G1 has been a staple in the annual calendar for NJPW. Though it has had many names over the years, the tournament has held the G1 Climax banner since 1991. Since the first event in 1991, the tournament has been used as an avenue for NJPW to elevate talent. Though the winner does get the largest slice of the pie as they are granted a title match opportunity at Wrestle Kingdom, NJPW’s version of Wrestlemania.
The field is usually a solid mix of veterans, current top stars and young talent working towards the next level. The tournament starts with two separate blocks with the wrestlers competing under a round robin format. The wrestlers with the highest point totals when the dust settles will battle in the finals. The beauty of the G1 tournament is it is also a vehicle that lays the plans for the rest of the year.
In recent years we have seen the G1 be the turning point in a wrestler’s career. Names like Okada, Tanahashi, Naito, Nakamura, Styles, and more recently Omega, have all used the G1 To catapult themselves to another stratosphere. The G1 has the ability to foster the creation of new stars while honoring its past.NJPW is arguably the best when it comes to using former top talent to get newer wrestlers up the ladder and over with the fans. This speaks to not only the tradition of the business but New Japan’s respect for their talent.
