Punjabi Prison Match for the WWE Championship
Jinder Mahal (c) vs Randy Orton

We all see what’s going on here, right?  I mean, this is like “John Cena WWE Booking 101”.  That’s right, this match has nothing to do with the Orton/Mahal rivalry and everything to do with John Cena and his potential record breaking 17th world title win.  When “The Maharaja” returned to the WWE after a 2 year hiatus, at first it just seemed like business as usual.  He went right back to the low-card status where he was when was released back in June of 2014.  However, he returned with about 40 pounds of new muscle and a light must’ve dinged in the creative team’s head.  He was a perfect guy to use to for Cena’s eventual title win.

Next thing you know, he wins one big match and very shortly after that, he’s champion.  I mean, could it be more obvious?  Cena returned to Smackdown on the 4th of July with an impassioned, patriotic speech only to be interrupted by a wrestler an with anti-American gimmick, Rusev.  Now those two will wrestle in a flag match at Battleground which Cena will undoubtedly win.  Ridiculously over-the -top symbolism, anyone?  Mahal, also using the anti-American gag, is pretty much the only heel on the roster that the fans will root against in a feud with Cena, so a Summerslam match between the two is happening whether we all like it or not.

So yes, Mahal wins.  I guess the only question is how bad this match will be.  The other installments of this gimmick failed to impress and Mahal and Orton in this structure don’t exactly scream excitement.  Much like Great Balls of Fire, Battleground seems like just another tool to set up Summerslam.  Let’s hope it was all worth it.

Winner and still champion: Jinder Mahal
