The Great Khali Returns to WWE at Battleground 2017 (Video)
Former WWE World Heavyweight Champion The Great Khali makes a surprise return and makes an immediate impact.
At Battleground 2017, the Great Khali made a shocking return to WWE after bring gone for almost three years. The last time anyone had seen Khali in a WWE lost to Rusev in a match during the latter’s initial main roster push.
Khali was known for many years as one of the least-popular wrestlers in WWE. A prime example of a wrestler being pushed solely for his size, Khali was known for being limited in terms of his mobility and underwhelming in terms of his matches. He wasn’t the best wrestler, that’s for sure.
But Khali did have some interesting moments during his career. Because of his enormous stature, Khali played the role of the ultimate monster in WWE. Any wrestler – even the Undertaker – was dwarfed by Khali’s enormous presence. Undertaker and many other wrestlers saw Khali as the immovable object…and somehow managed to topple him.
At Battleground 2017, The Great Khali made a stunning return, coming to the aid of his kayfabe family member, Jinder Mahal. For those who remember, Mahal is supposedly Khali’s brother-in-law, and the two of them had a brief rivalry over Khali’s sister’s dowry. Khali had spent some time in 2011 acting as Mahal’s bodyguard, before turning on Mahal in September of that year.
With this new return, Khali becomes the third person to join Jinder Mahal, after the Singh Brothers. But unlike those two, who are small and tend to be fodder for Mahal’s opponents, Khali is a monstrous menace that literally towers over everyone else on the SmackDown roster.
It will be interesting to see in which direction WWE goes with this new twist. It’s no secret that WWE wants to expand further into the Indian market, and Khali has a history with WWE already. It’s possible that he’ll be used to elevate Mahal further in the hopes of increasing WWE’s presence in that country.

For now though, Khali can be thanked for coming to Mahal’s rescue and helping him secure the WWE Championship until the next WWE PPV.
