John Cena and Rusev battle over national pride at WWE Battleground.

It is a rivalry that has stood the test of time.  The United States of America versus everyone else and this time Bulgaria is on the other side.  This isn’t the first time these two men, John Cena and Rusev, as they have faced with their countries nationalism on the line, before Battleground.

Rusev was victorious in this match at a time where he was one of the most dominant United States Champions of this era.  If there is anyone who can stop the Bulgarian Brute and has done it before, it is Cena.  The winner has to take their flag from its designated pole to its post at the top of the stage.

Rusev’s game plan is to get his flag from the pole early but Cena is on top of the strategy.  After Cena begins his climb to the American flag, Rusev begins to wear him down with his power offense.  Everything that Cena tries, Rusev has a counter for early in this flag match.

John Cena mounts a comeback after taking a beating to begin this match.  The comeback is short lived as he is quickly dumped to the outside of the ring giving Rusev another chance to retrieve his flag.  After catching John Cena in a powerbomb, Rusev is the first competitor to retrieve the Bulgarian flag.

Cena locks in the STF on Rusev which allows him to grab the U.S. flag.  The path to the pedestals on the top of the ramp is basically a stalemate.  It looks like Cena has found his path to the ramp but Rusev starts dealing damage with the steel steps.

Rusev tries to end the flag match with a pair of tables but his version of the Attitude Adjustment is fought off by Cena.  John Cena has his chance to finish the match but Rusev uses the flag stand to stop that from happening.  He locks in the Accolade on John Cena and goes to grab the Bulgarian flag.

As he is ascending the pedestal, John Cena literally stops the flag from going into the holder.  Rusev continues to fight and attempts the Accolade again but Cena fights if off and puts him through two tables with the Attitude Adjustment.
