WWE SummerSlam 2017: The Women’s Revolution Will Take a Step Back
By Jay Sichler
With two very subpar Women’s title matches scheduled for Summerslam, the women’s revolution could take a massive step back at the biggest party of the Summer.
We are only a few short weeks away from the biggest party of the Summer, Summerslam. The event over the last few years has been regarded as the second biggest event of the year just behind WrestleMania.
With the WWE viewing the event so highly they generally try to put on the best match cards they possibly can. The event already looks promising as we will see a Fatal Four-Way for the Universal Championship.
However, as we saw this past week the Women matches this seems to be a bit lackluster compared on what we could’ve had. This past week at BattleGround, Natalya shockingly won the Five-Way Elimination match.
Many fans were hoping and expecting that either Becky Lynch or Charlotte would end up winning the match. Fans are already disappointed and angry that they will not see either The Queen or The Lass Kicker competing at the big event.
On the RAW side of things Bayley pulled a massive upset over her best friend Sasha Banks to earn the right to face Alexa Bliss at Summerslam. Fans were hoping to see the feud between Bliss and Sasha continue.
The two had faced at Great Balls of Fire, with Sasha Banks winning by a count-out. It seemed likely that the two would continue their feud at Summerslam but as we saw on Monday that will not be the case.
With both title matches for the RAW and Smackdown Live brands now set, fans and critics alike are worried these matches will hurt the Women’s Revolution. First, on the Smackdown Live side, fans are now getting frustrated over Naomi’s run.
Since winning the championship at WrestleMania, Naomi has yet to enter a feud against one of the other top females of the brand. Her title matches have consisted mostly of facing, Lana. In fact since WrestleMania, Naomi has only defended her championship on pay per view once (Money in the Bank).
Fans have been wanting to see Naomi face tough competition and that has not happened yet. This has really hurt her reign and it has begun to anger many fans who feel Charlotte or Becky should be getting a shot.
Charlotte and Becky Lynch are two of the best female competitors in the world, and leaving them off the second biggest event of the year is a major blow. Natalya at this part of her career is seen nothing more than a veteran used to help get other talent over, just like Mickie James on RAW.
The fact that at Summerslam she is receiving a title match over top stars like Charlotte and Becky could hurt the Women’s division on Smackdown Live. The only way this could be saved is if Carmella cashes in her briefcase at the big event.
On the RAW side, the last thing fans want to see is another Bayley and Alexa Bliss match. Despite the talent that both of them have the two just don’t seem to have very good chemistry with another.
During their feud over the Spring, fans were forced to watch one of the worst segments in the history of RAW involving those two. Then the duo possibly put on the worst match of the year when they faced off at Extreme Rules.
Fans were really hoping to see Sasha Banks and Alexa Bliss clash one more time. The two had a solid match at Great Balls of Fire and the two seem to click very well. They are both strong on their microphone and with their attitude’s they could’ve delivered strong promos.

WWE could’ve also built this match around Sasha Banks trying to earn some redemption at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The last two years WWE has been in Brooklyn for Summerslam weekend, Banks has lost two major matches.
The first year at NXT: TakeOver she lost her NXT Women’s Championship to Bayley. The following year at Summerslam she lost her Women’s Championship to Charlotte. So going into the event the company could’ve billed this match as Sasha trying to redeem herself and rid herself of her curse at the Barclays Center.
Instead, fans are preparing to see another lackluster contest between Bayley and Alexa Bliss. The only chance this match gets saved is if Sasha is somehow added to the match or we see The Boss finally turn Heel, and costing Bayley the championship starting then a program between the former best friends.

Any way you look at it for the moment we are not getting the most appealing Women’s matches at Summerslam. With the Women’s division making major strides these last few the hope is that these matches won’t damage the progress the division has made.
