WWE: Enzo Amore and Big Cass Should Not Reform

With backstage heat and having suffered humiliation at the hands of his former partner, Enzo Amore’s future in WWE is up in the air. Reforming a tag team with Big Cass, however, isn’t the right way to proceed.

It was only a matter of time before Big Cass would turn heel on Enzo Amore on WWE Raw, seeing as how the company has always been higher on the former of the two. Beyond the fact that Cass is, you know, seven-feet tall, the company has never depicted Enzo as anything beyond a joke. Enzo is used to take comical bumps in ring, he’s rarely given legitimate offense, and he is nothing resembling a competent in-ring worker.

Enzo reportedly has heat from pretty much everyone backstage, because disrespecting the business, annoying people, and bringing guests into the locker room aren’t the best ways to endear yourself to others. The WWE confirmed these rumors by addressing them on their show “Bring It To The Table”, and it’s clear that Enzo is only a babyface to the crowd.

There are rumblings that Enzo could turn heel and reunite with Big Cass at SummerSlam, possibly because the WWE has no clue what do with the man with the “Gift of Gab”. It would make more sense for Enzo to move to NXT, 205 Live, or, better yet, become a mouthpiece for somebody else.

Perhaps the creative team is having second thoughts about splitting up Enzo and Cass, but it’s clear that Cass needed to be freed from Enzo. Although Cass isn’t particularly interesting, he did come off like a  legitimate heel in the aftermath of the break-up. He had a bevy of heat from the fans and cut an excellent promo on Raw Talk after defeating Enzo in a squash match at Great Balls of Fire.

In every match since the break-up, Cass has been portrayed as being superior to Enzo, to the extent that their matches look more like comedy skits than actual wrestling matches. It was disappointing to see how quickly Enzo lost to Cass, because they could have actually told a story here. However, it makes sense for the WWE to make Cass look much better than Enzo. It allows both parties to move away from each other quickly, and it’s also easy to see that Cass is indeed the better wrestler. They wanted to move Cass to a program with Big Show so that Cass could pick up some positive momentum for his career, perhaps pushing him into a title program thereafter.

So if the whole point of having Cass squash Enzo was to prove that he is unequivocally the more talented of the two and was being held back by Enzo, why would they reform? It just doesn’t make sense on any level. Cass doesn’t need Enzo, especially since he somehow never won tag team gold with Enzo as his partner.

I can buy into the idea of Enzo turning heel, because he certainly acts more like a heel than a face. Fans love cheering for him because of his work on the mic, but he has so many traits typical of a heel. Enzo is a guy who likes to insult others, has bigger people fight on his behalf, has a mouth that writes checks that he can’t cash (who said Cass doesn’t have any mic skills?), and once tried to hook up with Rusev’s wife Lana.

By having him suspended from a shark cage, Enzo could interfere and turn heel, which has been the speculation after Bryan Alvarez noted how infrequently babyfaces are placed in shark cages. I still think Enzo will remain a face, because he operates on a different portion of the heel-babyface spectrum than others. He’s always been a tweener, since he’s given babyface reactions despite being a coward who talks a lot but cannot wrestle.

As a solo competitor, Enzo should cheat to get wins and use underhanded tactics, because he’d be a far more interesting character if given a chance to walk the line. I could see him either taking a step in that direction at SummerSlam, or taking a massive bump that causes him to leave Raw and take time off of TV in order to transition to his next role. That role, of course, should not involve the reformation of his tag team with Cass, because that should not even be a consideration given all that has transpired in the past couple of months.
