If Cena feuded with Joe, there’s a lot of history that can be brought up during the build.

Way back in the early 2000s, Cena and Joe had some of their earliest wrestling experience with Ultimate Pro Wrestling. The California-based promotion had ties to WWE’s developmental program at the time. The video at the top of this page was posted by WWE back in December. Their past relationship going from enemies in the ring to friends out of it is definitely something to mention if these two go to war on Raw.

If WWE is already acknowledging past history between these two, it’s only a matter of time before their paths cross in a WWE ring. A lot has obviously changed since UPW, but both guys have had their fair share of successes. We know Cena tied Ric Flair’s record of 16 world championship reigns. But Joe is also a multi-time former world champion in Ring of Honor and TNA. He’s also the first two-time NXT Champion in history.

Interestingly, there’s already a John Cena vs. Samoa Joe match being advertised. One week after SummerSlam, WWE is holding a Raw Live Event in Tupelo, Mississippi. That show is currently advertising what would be the first WWE match between these two accomplished grapplers. As always, card is subject to change, but it’s an interesting wrinkle in this thought experiment.
