Even though she was set up as the fill-in for Bayley, Sasha Banks defeated Alexa Bliss for the Raw Women’s Championship at WWE SummerSlam 2017. Here are five reasons why this was the correct decision.

Since joining Raw during the “Superstar Shakeup”, Alexa Bliss has been one of the most impressive superstars in the WWE. She grabbed the women’s division by the scruff of the neck, won the title off of Bayley at Payback, and proceeded to control the division. Along the way, Bliss embarrassed Bayley, befriended Nia Jax, and sneaked away from Sasha Banks at Great Balls of Fire.

However, at WWE SummerSlam 2017, Bliss was unable to avoid a true face-to-face encounter with Banks, as “The Legit Boss” forced her rival to tap out to the “Bank Statement”, which gave her the victory over Nia Jax to place her in this championship match.

Banks’ win makes her a four-time women’s champion, and here are five reasons why this was the correct booking decision.

5. Feud With Bayley Can Come

As of right now, Bayley feels lost, and the WWE only has itself to blame. Vince McMahon can tell Corey Graves to talk about the “Bizarro World” all he wants, but by booking Bayley like a joke, he completely undermined a character who should have been a sure-fire moneymaker. Between the “This Is Your Life” segment and her complete unwillingness to use a Kendo Stick in her match with Bliss at “Extreme Rules”, Bayley has been portrayed more like a little girl and less like a grown woman who can kick some ass. Babyfaces need to win and look tough, and neither has been the case for Bayley.

Fortunately, there’s a way to make Bayley appear tough without turning her heel. All the WWE has to do is pull the trigger on a Sasha Banks heel turn by having her turn on Bayley. The seeds of a Banks heel turn were planted back when Bayley first won the Raw Women’s Championship from Charlotte Flair, but they never followed through with it.

Now, Banks is the champion, and she did what Bayley couldn’t – defeat Alexa Bliss. It’s easy for Banks to turn heel, because all she needs to do is cut a promo on Bayley, demeaning her former friend and mocking her for being unable to win. Banks can talk about how Bayley needed “The Boss” to win the championship, whereas Banks never needed anybody’s help to be champion.

We haven’t seen a truly compelling feud in the Raw women’s division since Banks and Flair fought last year, so watching the chemistry Banks and Bayley have would be a treat. I know many fans have already watched several Banks-Bayley encounters in NXT, but this is the kind of feud that will get fans of the main roster product, who are unfamiliar with Bayley’s work in NXT, to respect The Huggable One’s in-ring work more.
