Ronda Rousey: WWE’s Dream and Women’s Division’s Nightmare
By Sarah Hirsch
Many fans wonder if Ronda Rousey is WWE-bound. The company would love to cash in on the self-proclaimed most dangerous unarmed woman in the world.
Even for the non-MMA fans, Ronda Rousey is a household name. The seemingly untouchable fighter was feared in UFC, plowing every woman that had crossed her path. Until her loss to Holly Holm, Rousey was on top of the world, and everyone wanted a piece of her. Since then, Rousey has all but retired from UFC, and fans can’t help but to wonder if WWE is in her future.
It is no surprise that Rousey is a WWE fan, and she has made appearances for the company in the past. With her supporting fellow friend and Mae Young Classic competitor Shayna Baszler, her path to the sports entertainment world is set in stone (should she make that decision). One could say, it is almost inevitable.
Baszler’s dominance in the Mae Young Classic is a sign of things to come for the company and its women’s division. There is no doubt that the company will milk both Baszler and Rousey for all that they’re worth – and then some. At the end of the day, money talks and having not one, but two, women from UFC who are dominant fighters is a huge payday on both ends.
While there are winners on either side of that, perhaps the women’s division would be on the short end of the stick. More than likely either woman, or both women, would be booked very much like Brock Lesnar has been booked the last five years. While the appearances part is not determined, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all for Rousey to have the luxury of a part-timer, given her status. Just like Lesnar, Rousey would be invincible, undefeatable and most definitely untouchable. It doesn’t spell out good things for those such as Becky Lynch and Asuka.

With the Four Horsewomen confrontations that took place at the Classic, WWE would kill for the chance to have the WWE and UFC Horsewomen face off in a match.
That is a WrestleMania event that would bring in tons of interest in addition to millions of dollars. The ultimate question would be this: does the WWE women even benefit from the acquisition of Rousey or Baszler?
Again, looking at Lesnar’s ridiculous superhero stint, Rousey will be the female answer to Lesnar in terms of selling tickets and making money.
Simply put, Rousey would be the company’s female Beast Incarnate. On the plus side, it won’t be her facing Stephanie McMahon after all. As far as exposure goes, maybe the women’s division will benefit a little bit should Rousey come to WWE. But it would stop there as far as that goes.
WWE thrives on publicity, and they would get that in a hand basket if Ronda Rousey were to sign on with the company. She would be the shiny new toy, presented as the unstoppable Superstar that would tear the women’s division apart.

It comes down to Rousey’s booking, and if that scenario happens, then the women’s revolution would be in vain. The women’s division has seen its best days thanks to the hard work of those such as Lynch, Asuka, Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks. The division has gotten the recognition it deserves, but the signing of Rousey or Baszler will put that in jeopardy.
In essence, it could be stuff dreams are made of, or a living nightmare.
