WWE SmackDown Review: Highlights, Analysis, and Grades for Sept. 12

Promos, Promos, and More Promos
Rusev is interviewed backstage by Dasha. After losing to Randy Orton in 10 seconds at SummerSlam Rusev retreated back to his home country of Bulgaria. He wanted to surround himself with his family and loved ones. And while he was expecting a hero’s return, his family only saw him as a loser.
After his embarrassing loss, Rusev admitted that he lost his killer instinct. The only way he could get it back was to crush a legend.
It was critical moment for Rusev’s character. The promo was almost delivered like a babyface promo. Maybe their teasing his face-turn, or maybe it’s wishful thinking.
Jinder Mahal Attempts to Prove America is Racist by Being Racist Himself
Basically, yeah…Um. Jinder Mahal showed embarrassing pictures of Shinsuke Nakamura on the titantron. With the Singh Brother writhing in laughter next to him, Jinder Mahal made racist remarks about Shinsuke, including a joke about a Pikachu having a seizure.

He then turned on the audience, and said they laughed along with him because they were the racists. He then warned Nakamura that the fans would turn on them because of the color of his skin and his country of origin.
I think the promo was actually somewhat interesting, and turned the foreign heel trope on its head. However, Jinder’s reveal fell too flat to be totally effective.
KO & Sami Zayn Reminisce
Backstage, KO is making more preparations for the Kevin Owen Show, until he spots Sami Zayn. Kevin Owen’s asks Zayn if he remembers when the two drove through a blizzard to wrestle in front of 490 people in an armory. During their trip, they promised to each other they would never do anything like that again, and vowed to make it to the WWE together. Owens wants Zayn to remember that promise once Zayn is fired and forced to work in front of 40 people in an armory. And he wants Zayn to know that, that he forgives him if he has to break it.
Zayn responds that he would rather work a match in front of 40 than work under KO. God, I want a Sami Zayn push so badly!
