WWE: Vince McMahon Taking Shots at CM Punk During Promo?

On last night’s edition of WWE Smackdown Live, Kevin Owens and Vince McMahon had a heated exchange on the microphone. However, during the promo, did McMahon cleverly take shots at CM Punk?

During the last segment of SmackDown Live, the WWE CEO and Kevin Owens had a back-and-forth, regarding the actions Shane McMahon, Vince’s son, had taken on Owens — physically assaulting the former US Champion. The promo included Vince making a match at Hell In A Cell, however, it also mentioned a potential lawsuit Owens may have filed.

As some may know, former WWE employee CM Punk is currently involved in a lawsuit against the Sports Entertainment juggernaut, involving Dr. Christopher Amann. In February 2015, Dr. Amann filed a complaint in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois against Phillip Jack Brooks (CM Punk) and Scott Colton (Colt Cabana). The complaint was made because CM Punk and Cabana questioned Dr. Amann’s professional opinion, moreover, questioned his ability as a doctor on the ‘Art Of Wrestling’ podcast.

Recently, the two (CM Punk and WWE) have been locked in a stalemate over the lawsuit, with Punk and Cabana disputing expenses that “WWE was forced to incur in connection with responding to the subpoena”. The case is scheduled to carry on into 2018, with still more information yet to be revealed.

With all that in mind, let’s take a look at Vince’s dialog to Kevin Owens, on live TV:

"“‘I’m gunna sue every McMahon family member. I’m gunna sue WWE. I’m gunna sue the board of directors. And if could, I’d sue every individual in the WWE Universe, right?’. All because you think you’ve got the upper hand, all because you want that power, don’t ya? Well, let me give you a little hint what happens if you file that lawsuit – the moment you do, I’m personally going to be on the phone to your attorney, hopefully you’re there and on speaker phone – because when you file the lawsuit, you will hear these words… Kevin Owens, you’re fired [graspy voice]. So go ahead, file your lawsuit, Kevin. Do have any idea, any idea at all, of how many lawsuits I’ve been in — how many courtroom battles I’ve been in? You do know how many I’ve lost, Kevin? Not one! You see, for better or for worse, the laws of this land are written for people like me. There’s a ‘B’ associated with my name and that ‘B’ is billionaire. By the time this lawsuit ever gets to court, it won’t be next year, it won’t be the following year, it may not be ten years from now — who knows when it’ll be? By the time that lawsuit gets to court there’ll be a ‘B’ next to your name, bankrupt. So Kevin, go ahead and file your little lawsuit and see what happens.”"

So is Vince taking shots at CM Punk? Well, he sure could be. It’s common knowledge that the chairman of the board is known for being incredibly spiteful and vindictive. And calling Punk out – albeit loosely – is certainly something in McMahon’s playbook.

Conversely, could Vince be saying all this just for a storyline? Well, yes, of course. The statements he made do fit in with the narrative, however, you must admit the tone and phrasing does sound very similar to the current ‘behind closed doors’ battle with Punk.
