Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn

Owens def. Zayn via Ref Stoppage

Rating: 3.5/5

Two hours of anticipation all leads to this. Sami Zayn once again appears all business as he makes his way to the ring. He even has a new titantron, which looks really great!

The match is brutal affair with KO land a bunch of power moves on Zayn. But Zayn is able to land most of his offense, and even sets up for the Helluva kick, which KO avoids. However, things begin to break down for Zayn after he goes for a tornado DDT through the turnbuckles and is met with a superkick. Owens then grabs Sami and powerbombs Zayn on the corner of the ring. The ref comes out to check on Zayn and orders the timekeeper to ring the bell.

I really wish that these two were given 10 minutes to have a match, but at this point I’ll take what I can get. The crowd was super hot for this match, chanting “this is awesome!”

After the match stoppage, medical personnel come to ringside to help Sami Zayn to the back. Not content with just defeating Zayn, Owens blindsides everyone, grabs a chair, and wedges Sami’s neck between it. Just as it looks like Owens is about to do some irreversible damage to Zayn, Shane McMahon’s music plays.

Owens tosses Zayn into McMahon and then runs through the audience. The two taunt each other as SmackDown Live goes off the air.

Though it’s great to see Sami Zayn in meaningful feuds, it still doesn’t feel like the WWE is taking advantage of his talent. Zayn, right now, is just a prop to help put Kevin Owens over even more as a heel. He’s a damsel in distress. And personally, I don’t think one of the best wrestlers WWE has should be a getting the assist from the Commissioner who is 20 years older than him.

But honestly, I probably won’t be happy until Sami Zayn is WWE Champion.
