3. United States Championship: AJ Styles (c) vs Baron Corbin vs Tye Dillinger
So before we get to all the good stuff from this match up, let’s get the one thing out of the way that hurt this match. When Dillinger successfully talked his way into this match based on his clean pin of Corbin during the “go home” Smackdown, the result of this match was basically set. “The Perfect 10” gave the company the perfect way to have Styles drop the belt without being pinned thus keeping him strong for more future dealings with “The LoneWolf”. So with the ending looking very predictable, it became the responsibility of the three men involved in the match to make that notion not be a big deal. Did they pull it off? They sure did.
All three men were terrific Sunday night but this match looked like Corbin’s coming out party. He was so good at HIAC that it made him finally look like he belonged in the ring with a guy like Styles who of course, was his usual brilliant self. And Dillinger did enough to prove that he’s pretty close to the next level as he came close to victory multiple times. With the triple threat match becoming so saturated over the years, it was a breath of fresh air to see all three guys come up with so many original spots. And any time a match can make three different competitors look better than they did coming in, clearly did it’s job.
It was nice to see Corbin walk away with the belt. He’s had extremely disappointing run in what initially looked like was going to be his best year as a WWE superstar. However, after winning the Money In The Bank briefcase, everything went downhill, including losing his cash-in match on August 15th. In Sunday’s win, Corbin captured his first belt as a pro wrestler and to do it in such a quality match is a solid indictment about his future. From what we saw Sunday, the blue brands secondary title picture looks like it’ll be very well represented for some time to come.
