Why The WWE Needs a Major Resurgence in Stables
The world of WWE has been heavily influenced by stables over the years, and some of the most memorable moments in sports entertainment history have come courtesy of stables.
The WWE has produced some of the greatest feuds in company history via stables and they have created countless stars in the process. From the Four Horsemen to the New World Order to D-Generation X to Evolution, stables have been a major point of focus on wrestling programming for many years.
But in recent memory, stables have been a thing of the past in the landscape of the present-day WWE. With The Shield’s return, a major stable is back in the fold on Monday Night Raw. However, that return will likely be short-lived with all three members being major stars in their own right on Monday nights.
Without The Shield lasting for the long haul, the lack of stables will once again be an issue on Raw and SmackDown has no stables to mention either. Are stables a thing of the past or do they fit into the current landscape of the WWE?
The WWE needs to make more of an effort in bringing stables back into the fold. Past success doesn’t lie and some of the most successful moves in wrestling history have been the formation of stables. Even in recent years, The Shield and The Authority were very successful, and those are really the last two true stables the WWE has seen.
And while The Authority was comprised of mainly suits and authority figures, it did feature a few different superstars that benefited from the stable. The WWE has been criticized for not creating stars the way they used to do, and a sure-fire way to create more stars in the present day would be the formation of legitimate stables.
Just look back at history and think about how certain stables helped develop megastars in sports entertainment. Where would Triple H’s career have gone had he not been a prominent member of DX? He might have still been successful, but his initial run of leading DX throughout most of 1998 and early 1999 did wonders for his career.
The same can be said for Evolution. Look at the two up and coming stars in that group and see where they ended up. Randy Orton was unknown and an afterthought in the WWE before joining Evolution and now he is one of the greatest WWE superstars in history thanks in large part due to his “Legend Killer” persona which got its start in Evolution.
Batista also tremendously benefited from his time in Evolution and he would become one of the WWE’s biggest stars of the 2000’s after getting his start in the group. The Viper and The Animal likely would not have reached the levels of success they found without getting their feet wet in Evolution alongside Ric Flair and Triple H.
And in recent years, look at the success each of the members of The Shield has reached. Roman Reigns has developed into the most polarizing figure in the WWE and has been a multi-time world champion while main eventing the last three WrestleManias. He is, for better or for worse with most fans, likely the future of the WWE.
Seth Rollins has been one of the WWE’s top stars over the past few years as well and has been a world champion in his own right while finding success as both a heel and a babyface. Dean Ambrose continues The Shield’s trend of success and he is also one of the WWE’s most popular stars and has also been a world champion in the past.
Stables also shine a spotlight on superstars that usually wouldn’t get the chance to shine. Just look at the nWo in the late 1990’s. While many feel WCW oversaturated its idea, the nWo gave many superstars chances to be in a prominent role that normally would be forgotten.
Simply put, the WWE needs to put more focus on having a serious, legitimate stable or two. It doesn’t have to be very many and doesn’t need to be, but it would do wonders for both Raw and SmackDown.
The current scene of stables is basically non-existent and there aren’t any true stables to mention. The WWE could potentially create new stars if it goes this route, and that is what sports entertainment has been built around forever.
