WWE 2K18 Review: How Does This Year’s Game Stack Up?
By Bryan Heaton
MyCareer/Road To Glory
The “career” mode in WWE 2K17 was, for lack of a better word, trash. To this day, I still haven’t won the NXT Championship. This is despite being both the number one contender and in a rivalry with the current champion. But for some reason, I never actually get title matches, even though I win every non title match against the champ. It was frustrating beyond belief.
In WWE 2K18, though, things are much better. You create your superstar, go through some very basic training at the Performance Center, and boom, you’re on NXT TV in a month. You can wander around the PC, talking to any superstars you come across. Same goes for NXT tapings – you can walk to catering! Eventually, you get to deal with producer Barron Blade, the greatest worst dressed character in any media.
Blade basically throws you to the wolves, and you’re the number one contender for the NXT Championship before your first taping is done. Four weeks later, it’s TakeOver, and your objective is to beat Bobby Roode and have a three star match. So much better than last year’s game.
So after a single day over the weekend, I’ve gotten farther in MyCareer this year than all of last year. I’d say that’s a major upgrade. You still have to deal with random run-ins and such, but overall it’s a much better experience. And you can also come across your friends’ characters in MyCareer if you turn on a setting, but I don’t play online so I’ll probably never come across that.
Speaking of online play, there’s a Road to Glory mode that’s kind of like MyCareer, but all online. There’s weekly/monthly contests and stuff, but literally that’s all I know about it because, again, I don’t play online.

There’s a lot to love in WWE 2K18. It’s not perfect, but – to me, at least – it feels like more than just the same game with a shiny new roster. There’s been a lot of improvements to certain modes, plus the addition of new match types. But you still have to deal with a bunch of glitches, and certain things are really time-consuming.
