3. Jack Gallagher vs Cedric Alexander – RAW
So let’s dig in to RAW and what parts went wrong on Monday night. This begins with their use of the Cruiserweights, or lack there of. It’s been repeated for weeks in this piece and it will keep on being repeated until it’s fixed, because the WWE is never going to boost interest on 205 Live by only giving the members of that brand 2-4 minute matches on RAW. And that’s what they continue to do as for the second week in a row, these two outstanding talents were featured in the ring for just about three and a half minutes.
On the one hand, it’s actually a good sign to see that RAW is featuring a secondary feud from the Cruiserweight show on Monday night, so that’s a a good first step. But on the other hand, when they’re so woefully underutilized like this, what’s the point? It seems to be same formula over and over again but just with different superstars. The ropes turn purple, the fun baby faces come, the heels next, the bad guys win, the good guys get revenge the following week. Lather, rinse, repeat. These superstars deserve more than just cookie-cutter booking week in and week out and until some creativity is infused into the story lines, it’s going to just be more of this same, tired routine.
Here’s the real conundrum. This Sunday’s TLC will feature two matches from the 205 Live brand which would make one think things are headed in the right direction for the cruisers. There is the Enzo/Kalisto title match and a tag match between Alexander and Rich Swann taking on Gallagher and Brian Kendrick. However, with the amount of lazy writing that they’ve been subjected to, did this segment from Monday night make the anybody more excited for the latter? Not a chance.
The one good thing from this match, though: the Alexander Lumbar Check finisher. Man, that’s spectacular.
