WWE Releases One Of Its Most Underrated Wrestlers In Emma

Emma has been one of the WWE’s most impressive female wrestlers over the past several years, but after using her incorrectly for months, both sides have agreed to part ways.

Whether it was locking horns with Paige in NXT or playing nuanced characters that always managed to captivate the audience, Emma made her mark in the WWE despite a jarring lack of silverware. Her latest run post-injury and post-Emmalina (who thought of that one, again?) wasn’t memorable in terms of accolades, but Emma proved that she can play any character and was as entertaining as ever.

Sadly, the WWE has announced that they have released Emma, and you can read the brief “future endeavors” announcement from the company here.

Emma’s release isn’t shocking by any means, because she wasn’t booked properly by the company for ages. Despite literally being an important figure in the women’s revolution due to her matches with Paige and the “Four Horsewomen” in NXT, as well as her segments there, Emma was instead reduced to something of a comedic relief character on WWE television in 2017. The company seemed more interested in giving her random losses or nonsensically changing her theme song to increasingly less applicable themes.

The timing of Emma’s release is interesting, because it comes on the heels of her actually being used more frequently. She scored some wins in multi-woman matches, including the match that allowed her to compete against Asuka at TLC. In that match with Asuka, Emma looked solid, and though this wasn’t as impressive as her match with Asuka in NXT (because, you know, main roster), she got a surprising amount of offense in.

It will be interesting to see if we receive more details about this sudden release, and it will also be interesting to see what Emma does next. If she wants to, she could succeed literally anywhere, and she could prove to other mis-used women on the WWE main roster (and there are plenty) that there’s opportunity for female wrestlers outside WWE.

In addition to being a fantastic technical wrestler, Emma is an exceptional promo who delivered some of the most understated character work in WWE. She will be missed by hardcore fans in WWE for making literally anything work, including the “I started the Women’s Revolution!” and “#GiveEmmaAChance” schtick this year.
