WWE Survivor Series 2017: New Day vs. Shield Match Will Be Instant Classic
By Ryan Disdier
After The New Day planted the seeds for an upcoming showdown with The Shield on Raw, fans should expect one for the ages at WWE Survivor Series 2017.
The plan prior to Monday night’s edition of Raw was for Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins of The Shield square off against The Usos of SmackDown.
There’s no question that match would’ve been fantastic. However, with what transpired Monday night, it appears fans may be getting another dream match.
During The Shield’s Raw Tag Team Title defense against The Bar, The New Day appeared inside the arena. The sudden distraction was enough for Sheamus to drill Rollins with a Brogue Kick, ending The Shield’s reign after the three count.
So with the champion-vs-champion match at WWE Survivor Series 2017 now appearing to be The Bar vs. The Usos, it leaves the door open for a possible Shield vs. New Day match.
This match is a dream match for a variety of reasons.
For starters, both teams are the quintessential example of strong three-man teams. Both units have mastered the psychology of the tag-team match, as well as the six-man tag. If you need proof of that, go back and watch pretty much any six-man contest either team has competed in over the past five years.
Whether it’s The Shield vs. The Wyatt Family, The Shield vs. Evolution, The Shield vs. The Usos, The New Day vs. The Club, The New Day vs. The Usos, chances are you’ll be very impressed.
There’s also the built-in rivalry between the two teams as both unit believes they’re the most dominant group in WWE history. What makes that a compelling storyline is that both teams have justifiable reasoning to think so.

The Shield were propelled to the top of the card and protected like few acts in the company ever were. All three members quickly collected championship gold, as the group ran roughshod over the WWE until their ultimate demise.
Of course, The New Day reigned over the WWE as tag team champions longer than any team prior. Their record-setting 532-day reign is one that likely won’t be broken anytime soon.
The teams possess similar parts, too. Both teams have two technically savvy, sometimes high-flying pieces. However, the two units each have a powerhouse, too.
One could argue the seeds for this match were planted earlier than Monday. Last December at Tribute to the Troops, the two factions — along with The Club — jostled for supremacy in a backstage segment.
Furthermore, The New Day are the perfect foils for The Shield. Ambrose, Reigns and Rollins’ collective demeanor is a no-nonsense one. Their bread-and-butter is acting as a unit to beat down opponents, before power-bombing them into oblivion. The group resembles a SWAT team that can tear the house down in-between the ropes.
The New Day, on the other hand, are the complete opposites. Instead of having a mean streak a mile long, the unit instead focuses on positive energy. The group has marketed a cereal titled “Booty O’s,” as well as unicorn horns. Basically, they’re the antithesis of what The Shield stands for.
And therein lies what makes this potential match so appealing. It’s going to be like Batman fighting the Joker, meaning it’ll display two polar opposites waging war.
The one thing preventing this match from taking place at WWE Survivor Series 2017 is “The Big Dog” Roman Reigns’ status. According to Tyler Conway of Bleacher Report, Reigns is still dealing with an illness, which may indeed keep him away from the pay-per-view event. Just because Reigns is advertised for the go-home episode of Raw doesn’t mean he’ll be competing just yet.
But even if the match doesn’t take place at Survivor Series, it’s a safe bet that it’ll eventually happen. There’s a lot of money to be made by this dream match, and the WWE would be wise to capitalize on The Shield’s return.

There’s a shot the match could just be Ambrose and Rollins vs. Kofi Kingston and Big E. Even if the company goes that route, it’s hard to be disappointed.
Whether the match happens this month or next year, the WWE has a big-money showdown on its hands.
