NXT Championship: Drew McIntyre (c) vs Andrade Almas
There have been a combined 11 NXT Champions among 13 title reigns since Seth Rollins won the inaugural title back in July of 2012. Since then, only one of those champions, Sami Zayn, has lost the NXT Championship during his first TakeOver show after winning the belt. That bodes well for Drew McIntyre and the idea that he would remain champ through the event looked even better when it was revealed that Andrade Almas would be his first challenger. Not that Almas had been bad. But his results in the past year plus hadn’t been great especially considering his 2-3 record at TakeOver events.
But things have changed drastically over the past three months for Almas and essentially ever since he added Celina Vega as his manager, he’s looked like a different guy. That was on full display at TakeOver: Brooklyn III in August when he bested Johnny Gargano in an absolute slug fest. This has led him to this showdown with McIntyre and for a guy who just a year ago was seemed to be scuffling, now looks like a real contender.
McIntyre almost seems to be trending in the wrong direction. Since winning the title from Bobby Roode at the same show as the Almas/Gargano match, “The Celtic Colossus” hasn’t been able to generate too much traction. But that will change Saturday night. McIntyre will win in what should be an exceptional match and get the signature win he so desperately needs.
Winner and still champion: Drew McIntyre
