Singles Match: Sami Zayn vs Shinsuke Nakamura

This one should happen for a multitude of reasons. One simple reason is that both guys will be looking for a new feud. And the easiest way to bring these two together would in punishment form for Zayn. By the time the post-Survivor Series SmackDown happens, Shane McMahon will be looking for blood, and Zayn and Kevin Owens will undoubtedly be at the top of his list. Not only did Zayn screw McMahon out of his match with Owens at Hell In A Cell, the duo tried to do the same to Team SmackDown in their elimination match Sunday night. And although their efforts didn’t lead directly to the loss, it held some weight.

What better way to punish Sami then to feed him to the “King of Strong Style”? Most likely what would happen would be Shane would make Zayn square off with Nakamura immediately Tuesday night. But if the creative team plays it right, they could expand this rivalry out for a couple of months, just long enough for Nakamura to win the Royal Rumble and go to Wrestlemania to face AJ Styles for the WWE Championship. Hey, a guy can dream, right?

But the best reason to go forward with this match is the history involved. Back in April of 2016, the duo did battle in one of the best ten matches of the last decade at NXT TakeOver: Dallas. In what was Nakamura’s debut, he and Zayn went toe to toe for 20 scintillating minutes that earned a standing ovation from the NXT Universe. Nakamura was the victor that night and it would be a terrific narrative to see Zayn change what looks like a punishment into a need to avenge that defeat. And at the very least, they would most likely tear the roof off the TD Garden that night. Fingers crossed on this one.
