WWE: Could Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn Win The Tag Team Titles?

Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn seem to be running the show on WWE SmackDown, even though Shane McMahon is the commissioner and Daniel Bryan is the GM, but could they parlay their chemistry into a run with the tag team titles?

Last year, Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt formed an unlikely alliance, and though this partnership was largely meant as a way for “The Viper” to betray “The Eater of Worlds” and win the WWE Championship, the tandem were briefly an awesome tag team. In fact, they won the SmackDown Tag Team Titles from Heath Slater and Rhyno at TLC before putting over American Alpha on an episode of SmackDown Live.

Although Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn won’t be turning on each other (again) for quite some time, could the two get their own opportunity to hold the SmackDown Tag Team Titles? Lately, Owens and Zayn have been inseparable, which makes sense since Zayn gifted Owens a win over Shane McMahon at Hell in a Cell by pulling “The Prizefighter” out of harm’s way.

Few duos in the WWE have has natural chemistry as Owens and Zayn, who spent years working together outside of WWE. And last year, they put together one of the best feuds, culminating in a huge win for Zayn at Battleground.

Now that they are on the same side, though, the entertainment value is just off the charts. Watching Zayn dance around to Owens’s theme has been priceless, and the way these two play off of each other is incredible. In the aftermath of their shenanigans at Survivor Series, which played a role in Team SmackDown’s resounding defeat, they were backstage striving to find people who would side with them. Of course, they were thoroughly unconvincing and found no allies.

Yet, Owens and Zayn emerged victorious in the main event of SmackDown Live, overcoming both The New Day and a sea of angry lumberjacks to scoop up the win.

While the victory was a classic, fluke of a win for the heel tandem, it is rare to defeat Kofi Kingston and Big E on an episode of SmackDown Live.

Owens and Zayn have been competing together frequently and are currently in a legitimate feud with the New Day, and a win over the New Day shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Following that episode of SmackDown, Owens and Zayn were involved in a Fatal Four-Way for the SmackDown Tag Team Titles.

The New Day, along with Shelton Benjamin and Chad Gable, were involved in the match for the Usos’ title. Owens took the pin,  but the fact that they were in that match is noteworthy.

Gable and Benjamin are the current tag team feuding with the Usos, who have ostensibly turned face. This means the Usos could retain and go on to face Owens and Zayn. Or if the WWE hasn’t solidified a Gable and Benjamin heel turn, those two could take the titles off of the Usos before eventually dropping them to Owens and Zayn.

Owens has won several titles on the WWE main roster already, but he’s never been a tag team champion on either brand. Meanwhile, Zayn, who is a former NXT Champion, hasn’t won gold on the main roster. Most fans would agree that a world title or a singles title would be more meaningful for Zayn, who is one of the best performers in the WWE.

However, Zayn and Owens have a history together, so winning the SmackDown Tag Title with Owens would be a special first title victory for him. Remember, Zayn turned to the dark side at Hell in a Cell because he finally realized that Owens was right all this time; there is no nobility in having a clear conscience and constantly losing. Having Owens actually boost Zayn to glory, in the form of the tag team titles, would be a nice bit of story-telling, as well as a cool moment.

SmackDown Live‘s main story is centered around Zayn and Owens, and the most interesting storylines have always been in the tag division. The Usos, The New Day, Breezango, The Ascension, and even Gable and Benjamin have been doing top-notch work over on “The Blue Brand”. Zayn and Owens have an even bigger spotlight than all of those guys, so they could make the SmackDown Tag Titles feel like an even bigger deal as title-holders.
