AJ Styles: Ranking His 5 Best WWE Matches So Far
By Ryan Disdier
The Face that Runs the Place AJ Styles has put together a variety of great matches in the WWE. What are his best five so far?
Since coming to the WWE, AJ Styles has been regarded as one of the company’s best workers.
The praise comes with good reason, as Styles consistently puts on great performances, regardless of who he’s in the ring with. It doesn’t matter if he’s in the ring with a cruiserweight or a super heavyweight; chances are he’s going to steal the show.
With that being said, it’s time to look back at the best five matches Styles has had to date.
The thing with Styles is he’s only going to have more memorable matches the longer he’s with the company.
Before we get started, it’s worth mentioning the fact that Styles’ opponents often don’t get the credit they deserve. People often say Styles will carry them, but it’s more often than not a two-way street. Styles will elevate his competition, but if they can’t work, he can’t single handedly produce a phenomenal match.
Honorable Mentions:
AJ Styles vs. John Cena (Royal Rumble 2017)
Many people will argue this match should be on the list, even in at the No. 1 slot. Of course, the two men delivered inside the ring.
However, this match lacked the truly unique feel the two’s SummerSlam bout possessed. Much more on this match later on, though.
AJ Styles vs. Dean Ambrose vs. John Cena (No Mercy 2016)
At the previous pay-per-view event, Styles had defeated Ambrose for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. This was the first opportunity he had to defend his newly one title against some serious competition.
That competition showed up in the form of the angry, dangerous former champion seeking retribution, as well as the at-the-time 15x world champion.
AJ Styles vs. Dean Ambrose (TLC 2016)
This match was great and had some awesome high spots. Styles hitting a 450 splash to put Ambrose through a table was amazing. However, an odd finish featuring a James Elsworth hurt the match as a whole.
AJ Styles vs Chris Jericho (WrestleMania 32)
This was Styles’ first WrestleMania, and it really stood as a preview of what’s to come. There was nothing inherently wrong with this one, it just lacked the significance and overall quality of some of the other matches on this list.
