16. Mil Muertes: Lucha Underground

Lucha Underground is home to some of the darkest and most sophisticated characters in wrestling, and we can only wait in anticipation for the next season of the promotion. But until then, all we can do is discuss some of the great characters and gimmicks that this show has given us, such as Mil Muertes.

Compared frequently to the Undertaker because of his own “dead man” gimmick, Muertes is seen by many as Lucha Underground’s most engaging character. He is an absolute monster, and his possessed character has that “cool” factor.

Muertes puts people in caskets, throws them from heights, and simply bruises and batters his opponents. He has no weaknesses and no soul. The man was built to inflict absolute carnage, and that’s exactly what he does. It’s no wonder why he’s one of the most popular characters in wrestling, and there’s something about him that’s even more mystical than ‘Taker. Perhaps, Muertes’s character feels more ethereal, or perhaps it is his partnership with the dastardly Catrina.

Whatever the case, Muertes is vengeful, intimidating, and impervious to his opponent’s attacks. It would have been easy for LU to tread too far into “Taker knock-off” territory, but Mil Muertes is different and, if I can admit this, feels far, far less “hokey” and far more intimidating.
