WWE Royal Rumble: Universal Championship Triple Threat Match Set
By Bryan Heaton
At Royal Rumble, the Universal Champion Brock Lesnar will defend the title in a triple threat match.
To kick off WWE Raw this week, Kurt Angle came to the ring to address the Univeral Championship situation. The planned number one contender’s match between Braun Strowman and Kane ended in a double count out. So Brock Lesnar was left without a challenger at Royal Rumble.
Angle promised to make his decision by the end of the night, but Braun Strowman and Kane each headed to the ring to plead their case. This brought out Paul Heyman, who introduced the champion himself.
A stare down between the three monsters forced Angle’s hand, and he made his decision right then and there. At Royal Rumble, Brock Lesnar will defend the Universal Championship in a triple threat match against both Braun Strowman and Kane. A brawl between the three competitors saw Lesnar strike first, putting Kane down – briefly – with a big F5.
It was a fairly obvious outcome based on everything that’s happened in recent weeks, but getting confirmation at least moves things forward. Lesnar has been Universal Champion since WrestleMania 33, when he defeated Goldberg. Since then, Lesnar has defeated the likes of Samoa Joe, Roman Reigns, and Strowman himself to retain the title.

Strowman, though, is on a bit of a hot streak. Any punishment he takes is seemingly absorbed and refocused into stronger attacks. He was one of the surviving members of Team Raw at Survivor Series, and has solidified his reputation as one of the bright young stars in WWE.
Kane, on the other hand, is likely in the twilight of his career, focusing more on his political aspirations. But he is still capable of doing what is necessary to win a match.
In his illustrious twenty-plus year career, Kane has never faced Brock Lesnar. After all this time, getting those two in the ring is going to be something to behold.

The Royal Rumble is still six weeks away, but with a big world title match set in addition to the namesake battle royal the card is taking shape. A triple threat is a good way to showcase multiple superstars, and Lesnar and Strowman especially should put on a show.
