WWE: Ranking Brock Lesnar’s PPV Matches In 2017
3. Brock Lesnar Defeats Goldberg At WrestleMania 33
Most fans in attendance at Camping World Stadium wanted to see Brock Lesnar defeat Goldberg for the Universal Title. That may sound surprising, since Lesnar isn’t usually the most popular person in a crowd filled with “smarks”. But many fans were upset with Goldberg’s quick win over Kevin Owens at Fastlane and deemed Goldberg as a sideshow, since his matches are even shorter than Lesnar’s and contain even fewer wrestling moves (plus, Lesnar used to put on wrestling clinics with Kurt Angle.)
So when Lesnar defeated Goldberg with an F5 after kicking out of a spear/jackhammer combo earlier in the match, the crowd went wild. The match itself was fast, but it was very much a “sports entertainment” match and served its purpose well. It featured Lesnar leaping over Goldberg, a huge barricade spot, a vast number of German suplexes, and that aforementioned kick-out of the jackhammer.
This was Lesnar’s latest crowning moment at WrestleMania, and The Beast Incarnate pulled what was easily one of the top three matches of Goldberg’s career.
I won’t lie: this match wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and I still get people on Twitter sending us angry tweets about this one. But this was the best possible outcome for both performers, and Lesnar executed some awesome, highlight-reel moves that can appeal to the more mainstream audience that tunes in to WrestleMania.
