When Brock Lesnar Drops The Title, Business Will Pick Up For WWE
By Harry Austen
The “Beast Incarnate”, Brock Lesnar is currently on his way to WrestleMania 34 as the Universal Champion, where he will (most likely) face Roman Reigns (and lose). Following Reigns’ win, or whomever defeats “The Beast”, business will pick up for WWE.
While I’m a massive fan of Brock Lesnar and everything he brings to the table for WWE, even I realise that a champion that can’t be bothered to defend his title every month isn’t “best for business”. The build to ‘Mania Season’ should be a exciting one, however, currently, I haven’t been a fan. And the main reason for this is Lesnar.
It feels like Lesnar, and subsequently, the Universal Championship, is in a holding pattern. For the most part, from now until Lesnar squares off against Reigns at WrestleMania, the storyline is filler. It’s been that way for a while, and the worst part of it all is that the fans are knowledgeable of it. The ‘WWE Universe’ knows what match is headlining the “Grandest Stage of Them All” and, as such, it makes Lesnar’s feuds mean very little.
Take The Rumble for example; we all know Strowman and Kane aren’t winning the belt. At best, Kane will take the pin-fall and Braun will look good in defeat. It’s simple and predicable booking, which WWE have favoured for the majority of Lesnar’s most recent run. And it’ll most likely carry on until the “Samoan Badass” knocks him off his throne.

But hey ho, it’s not all doom and gloom. What about after WrestleMania, I hear you ask? Well… as Jim Ross would say, business is about to pick up.
Imagine a world where Lesnar isn’t the Universal Champion. But Roman Reigns is. Yes, of course I’m going to get ‘smart fans’ moaning at me for even uttering his name, but honestly, I’d much rather have a young, ambitious worker as the champion battling it out night-after-night on Raw, than a part-timer who seemly walks in, does some suplexes, and leaves like he’s got a plane to catch – which he most likely has.
Not only would Reigns, or whomever conquers ‘The Conqueror’, being the Universal Champion help business by being around and defending the title, it would also helps the whole roster, and more specifically, the title scene.
Recently, a story broke about plans changing for Finn Balor, who was reportedly penciled in to face Lesnar at the Royal Rumble (as well as previously being rumoured to face Lesnar at Survivor Series).
One of the rumoured concerns from Vince McMahon was that he wasn’t ‘over’, however, I don’t buy that story one bit. The rumoured story I do buy, was that McMahon didn’t want Balor to lose to Lesnar as the ‘Demon’.
Because wouldn’t you know, if you’re facing Lesnar, you’ve gotta lose, dammit! And guess what, if the match would have taken place (so close to WrestleMania, I might add), Balor would have suffered the same fate as Samoa Joe and Braun Strowman in their respective singles bouts against “The Beast” – a squashing.

When Lesnar is in the title picture, he is the title picture. Because of his immensely strong booking, WWE have, realistically, booked themselves into a corner. And given how much they pay him – for so little dates – they’re forced to keep him as a special attraction and, as such, have no other option than to present him as the beast he is. Furthermore, because they’ve booked themselves into a corner, and because they’ve presented him as such an unstoppable beast, no one (yet) can truly stand a chance.
But all that changes come WrestleMania 34 when Reigns takes the title. Yes, it’s predictable, but yes, it most certainly is “best for business”.
WWE without Universal Champion Brock Lesnar will finally be filled with real excitement. Instead of Superstars working their way up, just to be knocked down to earth by Lesnar, we’ll see talent actually hold on to their credibility when they lose a championship match. WWE creative won’t have to worry about protecting certain guys at the thought of Lesnar destroying them. And finally, and most importantly, with ‘The Conqueror’ out of the title picture, WWE can start to elevate talent that wouldn’t stand a chance against Lesnar.

All in all, post-Lesnar as the Champ looks to be a very intriguing scenario.
