WWE Royal Rumble 2018: Ronda Rousey Doesn’t Need To Win

The women’s revolution will take a historic turn for the better at WWE Royal Rumble 2018 with the first-ever all-women’s Royal Rumble match.

WWE Royal Rumble 2018 is shaping up to be a very important night for the WWE on several fronts.  Championship matches and two Royal Rumble matches will undoubtedly affect the WWE moving forward as WrestleMania season gets going.

But one match particularly could affect the course of the WWE forever.  The announcement of the first-ever all-women’s Royal Rumble match had been talked about for a while, but actually hearing it officially announced was truly something special.

After years of women in the WWE being mistreated and not given a fair shot at showing what they can do, the company has upped the ante over the past year or two.  And the women’s Royal Rumble match should take the women’s revolution to another level.

The match will feature the brightest stars in the women’s division today as well as an expected few NXT call-ups as well.  The excitement of the unknown should greatly benefit this first time ever match.  And another strong possibility for the match is returns and/or debuts.

One debut, in particular, would dramatically shake up women’s wrestling forever.  There has been a lot of chatter over the past few months that former UFC standout Ronda Rousey will sign a deal with the WWE sometime in the future.  And apparently, that future is now.

Outlets have been reporting that Rousey has signed a deal with the WWE, but that the deal’s terms are still unknown.  It seems unlikely she’ll be a normal, full-time wrestler and could possibly be on a similar deal that Brock Lesnar has been on since his return to the WWE in 2012.

Having someone with the star power and reputation of Rousey will open more eyes to the WWE’s product, which is something Vince McMahon thrives on.  But just how far is The Chairman willing to go to make a splash with her debut?  Some suggest it could be imminent.

There is speculation that Rousey could make her WWE debut in the women’s Royal Rumble match.  Having her appear in the match would be a major development and would surprise many people, but some believe the WWE would go even farther than just having her compete in the match.

More from Royal Rumble

Some believe that Rousey could actually win the Royal Rumble match.  That would undoubtedly be a major publicity getter for the WWE and would likely draw more eyeballs to the product as a whole, but would it be the correct or appropriate move?  In short, absolutely not.

Having Rousey debut in the women’s Royal Rumble match is not a bad idea.  In fact, it might be a great idea if done properly.  But having her win the whole thing is an absolutely bad idea that would defeat the entire purpose of the match’s significance and what the match means to the women’s revolution.

The women’s revolution has been built on the shoulders of a crop of talent the likes of which the WWE has never seen before in terms of women’s wrestling.  And while Rousey is undoubtedly a tremendous, world-renowned athlete in her own right, she is not the right person to win the first-ever all-women’s Royal Rumble match.

Women like Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, Bayley, Becky Lynch, and many others are why the women’s revolution took off to begin with.  Along with that, they’re the workhorses of the women’s division in the WWE and should be the one’s to reap the benefits of this historic match.

There is nothing stopping the WWE from having Rousey make her debut in the Royal Rumble match, but the company needs to limit it at that and nothing more.  There’s no guarantee she’ll even be in the match in the first place, but she does not need to win the whole thing.  The WWE would be better suited to find another reason to have her in the match.

One possibility could be setting up a potential WrestleMania encounter at the Royal Rumble.  It could be as simple as someone surprising Rousey from behind and eliminating her, but it could go a long way.  After all, the WWE already tainted a historic women’s revolution moment this past summer and needs to avoid doing the same here.

Who could forget that James Ellsworth, for all intents and purposes, won the first-ever women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match?  The WWE ruined what should have been an even bigger moment than it turned out being.  A Rousey win wouldn’t be on that same level of catastrophe given that she’s actually a female, but it wouldn’t be good either.

If Rousey debuts at the Royal Rumble, she doesn’t need to win it.  The winner of the women’s Royal Rumble match needs to come via a superstar that’s a full-time participant on the roster and someone that has been a vital part of the women’s revolution in the first place.

This match should be a history-making moment, but it should come courtesy of a woman who’s been part of the process of getting to this point to begin with.
