Ronda Rousey upstaged Asuka

The first-ever women’s Royal Rumble match was held Sunday at the pay-per-view, adding an immeasurable amount of value to the already popular show.

Since the announcement was made on Raw in December by Stephanie McMahon, it was clear that WWE and its fan base were ready for a change in the women’s division. A change that, understandably, that fan base was incredibly nervous about.

Would WWE make the same mistake they did at the first-ever women’s Money in the Bank ladder match? Would they turn a glass-shattering fight into a freak show with little consequences for the women who turn out talent week to week?

Then, among all the pre-show nerves, the rumor that Ronda Rousey would make an appearance in the fight surfaced, and the emotional flood gate ripped open.

Most people weren’t passionate about her possible appearance, but there were some that grew concerned Rousey, a newcomer, would either win the match, or upstage it. Upstage it, she did.

After almost an hour of battle, Asuka came out the winner in the first women’s Rumble match. Asuka was heavily predicted as the potential winner, due to her undefeated streak and clear talent.

While on stage deciding on which title she wanted to compete for, Rousey stumbled in. The collective eye-roll was visible. Rousey, proving to be a terrible bluff, made her presence undeniable by trying to shake Asuka’s hand, successfully shaking Stephanie McMahon’s hand, wandering around the ring aimlessly, and doing a lot of pointing at the WrestleMania sign.

We get it, we’ll see you at the big show.

WWE clearly wanted the biggest bang for their buck when it came to Rousey’s debut. However, allowing her to upstage the first ever women’s Royal Rumble winner during her moment probably wasn’t the best way to go about it.
