Dolph Ziggler’s “return”
If you could confidently use the word “return”, that is.
Dolph Ziggler entered the match in a “surprise” appearance at the ever-crucial no. 30 spot. Though a small pop could be heard, for the biggest spot in the fight, it garnered a lack luster reaction.
The past few years have been visibly rough on Ziggler; transitioning from title-holder to jobber status in a short period of time. Though his spotlight has grown dimmer, he was also well-known as a wrestler who helped newcomers transition into the ring smoothly and safely. He was the well-trained and experienced one-guy welcoming squad.
Lately, Ziggler’s snarky character development has rubbed many the wrong way. His career looked finished after Ziggler teased his retirement, but he was able to obtain the U.S. Championship at the Clash of the Champions pay-per-view, much to the confusion of all.
Then, after getting the hopes up of many fans, he dropped the title, reportedly relinquishing the belt and walking out.
Ziggler lasted a sad 1:35 as the last entrant, before being almost immediately eliminated by Finn Balor. His entrance looked like a poor last second addition, had no point or reason, and didn’t fit within the narrative SmackDown has been building.
Let’s just figure out what to do with Ziggler, cement the idea, and move on.
