Why The WWE Needs Rey Mysterio Back Regularly
One of the most underrated and exciting superstars that has ever graced a WWE ring is the master of the 619, Rey Mysterio.
Mysterio has blazed a trail wherever he has been in his career, but reached his peak in the WWE where he debuted in 2002 after WCW went out of business in March of 2001. And during his stint in the WWE, Mysterio reached a level of success that men his size had no chance of reaching before.
The WWE universe was ecstatic to see his surprising return in the Royal Rumble match on Jan. 28. He returned to a massive pop from the live audience and looked to be in incredible physical shape that resembled his look as a member of WCW’s cruiserweight division some 20 years ago.
His return was awesome, but what does it spell for the future of Mysterio in the WWE? He hasn’t been in the company for any sustained amount of time in about five years and has bounced around in other pro wrestling experiments as well.
Many fans are already clamoring for the master of the 619 to return to the WWE on a more consistent, full-time basis. However, according to some sources, it was just a one-off appearance. But by the same token, other sources are more optimistic in a possible return.
Some believe that the WWE is working on a new deal for Mysterio that would keep him around more than just the Royal Rumble match. And if Mysterio can come back on a more full-time basis in the WWE, the opportunities are endless for potential matches and feuds. As a former three-time WWE world champion, Mysterio would immediately fit in among the current WWE landscape.
The WWE needs Mysterio back for a few important reasons. If the company is serious about keeping 205 Live around, having Mysterio join the division would immediately raise interest in the otherwise dilapidated brand. And even if he doesn’t join 205 Live, there are many other possibilities.

- Trish Stratus on WWE NXT would help elevate that women’s division
- Randy Orton signs with SmackDown to go after The Bloodline
- WWE and AEW will put on a full court press for Kazuchika Okada in 2024
- The Judgment Day is the top faction story in WWE
- Liv Morgan vs Rhea Ripley is perfect for WWE Royal Rumble 2024
Think about some of the dream matches that could take place if Mysterio ends up on Raw or SmackDown.
Who wouldn’t want to see Mysterio battle Finn Balor, or Seth Rollins, or AJ Styles, or Shinsuke Nakamura? There are countless possibilities for matches he could have as well as possible feuds.
And at 43 years old, he can still compete at a high level, as was evident in the Royal Rumble match as well as his independent wrestling work in previous years.
It wouldn’t have to be a week in and week out deal where he’s always on TV competing, but having Mysterio back on WWE TV for a consistent basis is just good for business.
He could provide great veteran leadership for the locker room and would add star power to whatever brand he ends up on. Not to mention, he could also help develop younger talent and give certain individuals much-needed momentum. And let’s be honest, there are many in the WWE right now that fit that mold.
The pop that Mysterio got at the Royal Rumble tells the entire story, and that story is the WWE universe still cares about him and wants to see him in the WWE. Whether he will end up back in the WWE on a consistent basis remains to be seen, but it’s a move that needs to happen for a variety of reasons previously mentioned.
