4. Sheamus vs. Roman Reigns

I don’t know if this is a hot take or not but this may have been a clash of the two greatest TV match men in wrestling history. Give either of these guys some time and a decent opponent and they’ll give something solid but give them each other and it leads to simply excellent pro wrestling. On paper, this had all the elements required to flop: it had zero stakes, a predictable winner and minimal build-up but yet here I am, celebrating it as an absolute thriller after they quickly hooked the audience into caring.

The styles that these two respectively bring gel beautifully too, with hard hitting action combining perfectly with their big match experience and the smooth transitions that come with it. Roman was always winning this match and rightly so but they worked hard enough and well enough to make you forget all those predictions as things approached the finishing line. That’s a lot easier to do when both guys understand selling too and a good example is simply Sheamus’ response after each and every Reigns’ kick-out. Great drama.

The eventual finishing spear was a great one which also helps and without ignoring Sheamus’ consistent contributions, Reigns really is extraordinary right now. He seems to have an excellent match every week and it’s quite astonishing how well he performs regardless of opponent. That skill alone explains why the company loves him so much, he can legitimately be trusted to steal the show with anyone at this point and that’s no mean feat.
