#1 – CM Punk vs Randy Orton – WrestleMania XXVII

Why it’s Underrated: It was trapped in the middle of one of the worst WrestleManias of all time.

Why it Shouldn’t Be: CM Punk took Randy Orton out of his comfort zone, and the result was a technically-sound classic.

Before one of the the most dull main events in show history, and before Michael Cole went over Jerry Lawler in what felt like an hour long match, CM Punk and Randy Orton took part in one of the few bright spots of WrestleMania XXVII.

In the weeks leading up to the show, the feud between these two had become very intense, culminating with a viscous parking lot attack by Punk, who targeted and injured the Viper’s knee. This injury would be the focus of Punk’s attention throughout their WrestleMania match. Each time that Orton seemingly turned the tide in his favour, Punk would go back to attacking Orton’s bad wheel.

Towards the end of the match, with Orton seemingly unable to put any weight on his injured leg, Punk looked to finish him off with a springboard clothesline. Orton, with one last-ditch effort, caught Punk with an RKO, and pulled the victory out of thin air.

It was a textbook example of storytelling and ring-psychology. On a disappointing card filled with celebrities and sideshows, CM Punk and Randy Orton showed that WrestleMania was still about the wrestling.
