Rey Mysterio

A surprise entrant into the Royal Rumble last month, Mysterio caught the professional wrestling community off guard. The moment his music hit the fans jumped to their feet to welcome a former champion and a pioneer in the world of cruiserweight wrestling. Not only that, but Mysterio looked fantastic as he easily kept up with everyone in the ring; looking like he was in rare form. Since then, he’s gone back on the “independent,” scene; competing against another legend in the sport, Jushin Thunder Liger, for a New Japan Pro event scheduled to air in March.

Mysterio could make an impact on the Smackdown brand; where he could be involved in compelling storylines with the likes of Kevin Owens, Baron Corbin and others. Plus, we know he’s capable of putting together a strong match with any colleague, as he’s done so for years in the industry.

Make no mistake, just because Mysterio is a cruiserweight doesn’t mean he should be shuffled away on 205 Live. Even though the product is getting better as Triple H has taken over production control, re-signing Mysterio and adding him to the show should not be a forgone conclusion. Instead, he could be a talent that makes surprise appearances for special matches, but that brand should stand on its own while Mysterio flourishes on the main roster.

After his appearance at Royal Rumble this year, many fans and wrestling media members opined for Mysterio’s return to the WWE. While that doesn’t seem like it’s occurring anytime soon, the former champion still has value to the biggest wrestling promotion in the world.
