WWE WrestleMania 34: Should Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens Feud or Form a Team?
By Rob Furness
Whether teaming together for tag team gold or giving us stunning 1-on-1 matches , Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens have been linked since their time on the indies. As WWE WrestleMania 34 approaches, what’s next for these two?
Currently, the duo have been rampaging through the blue brand as the Kevin & Sami Show feuding with Commissioner Shane McMahon. But as the WWE title continues to elude them, fracture in their friendship has started to emerge. It’s very possible, and more than likely, that by the time WrestleMania 34 rolls around we will see a new exciting chapter in their relationship.
Fight For-ev-er!
It’s very possible, given their history together, that Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn may go down in WWE history as one of the greatest feuds of all time. In fact, Owens and Zayn built their careers around delivering incredible matches together while feuding in PWG and ROH. Already in WWE they have feuded for the NXT and Intercontinental Championship. But their current story could see their rivalry turn on its head.
As much as it pains me to write this, Zayn has done an incredible job adding heel characteristics to his jovial character. It’s what makes his character so tragic; we know that deep down there is a good human being. But each week he takes a step further into the darkness. Heading into FastLane, Zayn has shown a mean streak and attitude that not even Kevin Owens was ready for.
To freshen up their rivalry, we could see Sami Zayn become the heel while Owens plays the part of a tweener. The story could build around the “bad influence,” Kevin Owens, realizing that he has pushed his friend too far over the edge. In fact, I think this is the ONLY way their story can continue. Having Sami face turn this early into his heel run would only halt his momentum.
Fight To-ge-ther!
The only thing more iconic than Sami and Kevin’s feud, is their friendship. Since they began wrestling, they have been synonymous with one another. Together they’ve won tag-team gold in various promotions. After Fastlane, it’s possible, though unlikely, that the two could enter the tag-team division as a proper team.
There are a number of issues that would dampen their arrival in the division. Firstly, it looks like the Bludgeon Brothers are being built as the next dominant team in the division. And given their propensity for heel vs. face matchups, having two heel teams battling for the tag team titles seems unlikely.
Secondly, the tag team division is already swamped with talent. From the undercard teams like The Ascension, Breezango, and The Colons, to teams that seem to only dabble in the tag division occasionally like Rusev and Aiden English. Throwing Sami and Owens into the division is only going to make it harder for those other teams to get air time.
Finally, SmackDown Live is seemingly starved for upper-card talent. With their unwillingness to pull the trigger on Baron Corbin and Dolph Ziggler, among others, there doesn’t seem much of a threat to AJ Styles. (Hence why the FastLane is now a Fatal 6-Way.) This is the issue that comes with inconsistent booking and no long-term story building.
Despite the fact they would – no doubt – have amazing matches with the very talented teams in the tag division, Sami and Kevin Owens would be much better served if they forged their own paths after Fastlane.
