Mania is Big Enough Already

Whenever Cena wins the WWE Championship again, it will be his 17th reign as world champion. That would break Ric Flair’s record of 16, which has been heavily discussed in the past.

When Cena defeated AJ Styles at the Royal Rumble in 2017 to tie the record, it was billed as historic. (Never mind that the reign itself was incredibly lackluster.) If that big a deal was made out of the record-tying win, imagine what kind of celebration or brouhaha would happen when Cena breaks the record.

Now do you want that to get lost in the mix of WrestleMania? There’s already enough happening on the Mania card in New Orleans. We have a Universal Championship match that’s a rematch three years in the making. There’s also the in-ring debut of Ronda Rousey, who is seen as the biggest crossover acquisition for WWE since, uh, Kurt Angle? Brock Lesnar?

Assuming Roman Reigns defeats Lesnar to finally, officially, 100% coronate him as The Guy, how many huge celebrations can you have at one show? There’s only so much confetti you can drop from the rafters – and there’s no more pyro, so no fireworks.

No, if Cena is going to get the spectacle he would deserve for breaking such a record, it doesn’t need the WrestleMania backdrop. Therefore, he should win the six pack challenge at Fastlane, get doused in confetti there, and then it can be business as usual at WrestleMania for the rest of the roster.
