#1) WrestleMania XXV – Triple H vs Randy Orton

From a kayfabe standpoint, picture yourself as either of the competitors at the start of this match. If you’re Triple H, then, over the last few weeks, you have seen your opponent punt your father-in-law in the head, and hit a DDT on your wife. If you are Randy Orton, you have dealt with your opponent breaking in to your home, attacking you where you lived, and terrorizing your family in the process.

One would think then, if you were one of these two men, you’d be chomping at the bit to get your hands on your adversary. If you were WWE however, you would forego this logical thought process, and instead opt for Triple H to do a cartoonish ring entrance, while Orton stood back and allowed him to take his time coming to the ring.

Triple H and Randy Orton were engaged in a blood feud. This was not the time for theatrics. This was the time for revenge.

Besides lacking the hatred and intensity that one would have expected, this match also had the unenviable task of following an Undertaker/Shawn Michaels contest that may have been the greatest match in WWE history. For 30 minutes, the two WWE legends gave it all they had, and the fans seemingly did too.

The act proved too tough to follow for Orton and Triple H. In what may have been a hastily called audible in an attempt to wake up the crowd, both competitors hit their finishing moves very early. Rather than re-engage the crowd, this exchange left them confused, and before long, even more quiet than before.

The year prior, Triple H and Orton were part of a fantastic WrestleMania WWE title match. Their singles follow up, in the main event of WrestleMania XXV, was fantastically disappointing.
