#2) WrestleMania XXVII – The Miz vs John Cena

The deck was stacked against them from the beginning.

Heading in to WrestleMania XXVII, event posters highlighted the main event of new WWE champion the Miz defending his title against top WWE star John Cena. However, looming large over this bout, figuratively and literally, was the Rock. The Great One’s WWE return, combined with his war of words with Cena, made it likely that the main event of the biggest show of the year would be a complete afterthought.

The Rock was the “host” of that year’s WrestleMania, and given his issues with Cena, the crowd (correctly) assumed, that the main event was not going to be over until the People’s Champ appeared. As a result, the match was contested in the shrouds of awkwardly deafening silence. The fans did not react to any big moves, and did not buy in to any near-falls.

As the match drew to a close, things went from bad to worse. The two competitors were brawling on the outside, when Cena tackled the Miz over a ringside barrier. On the way down from the fall, Miz smashed his head on the concrete, resulting in a concussion, and removing from his memory the entire finish of the match.

The Rock would appear shortly thereafter and pop the crowd, hitting Cena with a Rock bottom and costing him  the victory, but by then it was far too late for this disaster to have any hope of recovering. The Miz’s one-and-only WrestleMania main event was anything but awesome.
