5. Tag Match: Carmella & Natalya vs. Becky Lynch & Naomi
As of this writing, it’s been about 12 hours since Fastlane and I still haven’t figured the point of this match, or the reasoning for it in the first place. But it does beg the question, what is SmackDown doing with their Women’s division? The blue brand’s Women’s title picture is great, that’s not the issue. The title match Sunday was terrific and the prospect of Asuka facing Charlotte at Wrestlemania is awesome.
But what about the rest of the division? It’s a pretty talented one at that. In this match alone we were looking at three former world champions and the other statistically on the precipice of one with her Money In The Bank briefcase. But with essentially zero build up to this match outside of Lynch submitting Carmella on the “go-home” show Tuesday night, this match had it’s work cut our for it before the ladies even got into the ring.
But in a testament to how talented these women are, the fact that there was no build and they were only given about nine minutes to work, the match wasn’t too bad. It was pretty fun in spots actually. Carmella showed even more signs of improvement, Lynch and Naomi were there usual solid baby face selves, and Natalya’s continued mean streak was a lot of fun.
Once again though, what was the point? With Carmella picking up the victory for her team was that just to remind everyone that she’s still relevant with that briefcase in tow? I’m not exactly sure what good that would do because if anyone believes she’s going to cash that thing in on Charlotte or Asuka, they’re completely insane. In fact, this has bad news written all over it for “The Princess of Staten Island”. So most likely this was just a filler match. And as such, doesn’t turn the needle as far as rankings.
