5 Ruthless Aggression Era Superstars that should have been WWE Champion
By Mike Payton
William Regal
Ok. William Regal isn’t exactly just a Ruthless Aggression Superstar. In fact, he’s been wrestling since 1983. He was also a pretty big part of the Attitude Era as he was the Commissioner for a little while. He also held the Intercontinental, European, Hardcore and Tag Team championships in that era.
But the era where Regal was on top of the world didn’t come until 2007-2008. Right at the tail end of the Ruthless Aggression era and the beginnings of the PG Era. Regal became the Raw General Manager after winning a battle royal. He then feuded with Triple H before winning the King Of The Ring tournament. The very tournament he set up himself. Then this happened.
That’s right. Regal just decided to turn off the lights on Raw one night during a Triple H vs Randy Orton main event. This led to Regal receiving nuclear like heat. It was pretty clear that Regal’s next stop was going to be a full fledged run as the WWE Champion. As always, something had to happen at that exact time.
Regal, who had previously had issues with drugs and was even sent to a WWE sponsored rehab in his lumberjack days, was suspened for sixty days for his second violation of the WWE Substance Abuse Policy. This led to a KAYFABE firing on TV and the obvious end to any chance Regal ever had of winning the big one.
He did get his title match though. Months after his return he won the Intercontinental title for the fifth and final time when he defeated Santino Marella. Regal never rebounded. He went back to being just one of the boys and eventually he left his in ring spot and became an on screen personality. He’s now of course the Genral Manager of NXT.
