13. Roman Reigns – WrestleMania 33
If this list were entitled “Undertaker Matches That Enraged The Most Fans”, this match with Reigns at WM33 might be number one. But the fact of the matter is that for how many people the result of this main event angered, it was a pretty solid bout. And if Taker was going to walk away from the ring after it was over, and by the way he left his coat and hat in the middle of the ring it appeared that he would, then this would be a half decent way to do it. That part all appears moot at this point considering that all signs are pointing at a Taker/John Cena showdown at WM34, but had that not been the case, there are worse ways that The Deadman could’ve retired.
As mentioned, the match was decent. A heck of a lot better than Reigns’ main event the year before against Triple H although the crowd was pretty much the same level of against him as that match. But he and Taker took it to each other and outside of a few sloppy moments, the match was hard-hitting and felt real. It was a smartly booked match as well. If this was going to be Taker’s last hurrah, the fact that Reigns had to conjure everything he had inside of him and deliver spear after spear to finish him off made a lot of sense.
Taker taking his second WrestleMania loss to a guy like Reigns was never going to be a popular decision. Reigns has been an arguably more polarizing character than John Cena ever was in just the last three years and an honor like defeating The Deadman at an event that he has forever immortalized was tough to swallow. But history is history and the WWE will have live with it’s mistakes. But for the most part, these two men did what they had to do in Orlando that night.
