6. Triple H – WrestleMania XXVII

Ten years after their first battle, Triple H and Taker would do it again, but this time it wasn’t about status in the company. It wasn’t about who was going to be next in line for a WWE Championship match. And it certainly was not about vengeance or personal grudges. This match was about two things. Each man’s legacy and whether or not Triple H could be the man to end The Streak. For proof of that, look at each man’s activity for that year. “The Game” only wrestled in four televised events in 2011, and they were all pay per views. Taker only wrestled in one, this one. So to say that this was a special event and that both guys had one last thing to prove is an understatement.

Although both guys were clearly past their prime, HHH at 41 years old and Taker at 46, the amount of rest they both had made them both fresh for this No Holds Barred match in Atlanta. And they held nothing back. They broke tables, dented chairs, and took massive bumps. And sure, the amount of finishers that each man, especially Taker, kicked out of was a bit gratuitous. But it was also beautifully poetic as it illustrated both men’s desire to either end or keep The Streak alive.

The ending of the match was nicely done as well as “The Game” went for his trusty sledge-hammer to put away Taker, who’d absorbed a ton of punishment, only to get caught in The Deadman’s Hell’s Gate gogoplata submission which forced a tapout. The match was everything that this type of stage deserved between two of the most successful superstars of generation. But they weren’t done just yet.
