It was The Heart of 205 Live vs. The Soul at WWE WrestleMania 34 in the finals of the Cruiserweight Tournament. And while Mustafa Ali brought everything he had, it was Cedric Alexander who finally won the Cruiserweight Championship after over a year of pursuing the title.

The cream rises. That one cliche can explain how Cedric Alexander went from being a minuscule part of WWE 205 Live when the show was first launched to being the face of the brand that airs after SmackDown Live on Tuesdays.

Immediately when Drake Maverick (read: Triple H) took over 205 Live, Alexander and Ali had a match, and it officially ushered in the new era of the brand. The two left it all in the ring and woke up a dead crowd, showing that there is a place for elite work rate in the WWE. They also showed that 205 Live can be more than just a viable program for WWE. It can thrive.

Throughout the first ever Cruiserweight Tournament to crown a new champion after Enzo Amore was fired and vacated the title, all of the wrestlers on 205 Live only reenforced the idea that this can be one of the most entertaining shows in professional wrestling.

And at WWE WrestleMania 34, it all came together for both Mustafa Ali and Cedric Alexander, with the latter defeating his good friend to finally capture the Cruiserweight Championship. He was initially ticketed to grab the title off of Enzo after a lengthy feud with the cowardly champion, but this victory at WrestleMania is a thousand times sweeter.

Alexander and Ali have grown into big stars during the tournament, with all of their respective matches being must-see. Ali’s promos on Twitter were tremendous and showcased another side of his character.

Today’s WrestleMania match for the title was hard-hitting, and it showcased just how smart of a competitor Alexander is. He went right after Ali, using a bevy of strikes to try to ground the quicker opponent. There were several big spots, but nothing meant more than when Alexander put his foot on the rope after being hit by the 054. Ali was in disbelief and went for the move again, only to be blocked by Alexander.

Frustrated by how long the match was going, Alexander decided to put Ali away. He hit another devastating back elbow to his friend before ending the match with a Lumbar Check. But in a tearful act of true sportsmanship, he quickly grabbed Ali’s head to show his respect for his friend, whom he just defeated at WrestleMania to achieve his dream. Of course, this is a dream he shared with Ali, and they both made it happen today in front of the crowd, putting on a heartfelt match that wraps up an excellent story that 205 Live has been telling for months.
