Charlotte Flair Falls so New Faces can Rise in WWE
By Tom Clark
Charlotte Flair’s loss of the SmackDown Women’s Championship on the April 10 edition of SmackDown Live is still being felt among the WWE faithful. It’s not necessarily because of the loss itself. Fans knew that Charlotte obviously wouldn’t keep the title forever.
But the way she lost it has everyone talking. Charlotte Flair went down because of Billie Kay and Peyton Royce. The Iconics brutally attacked Flair and left her for dead, opening the door for Carmella to cash in her Money in the Bank briefcase. Charlotte was robbed from a storyline perspective. But in reality, she continues to be the master of her domain.
Charlotte is on top for a reason. She has had her critics over the years of course and those critics scrutinize everything. But she has proved herself many times over as a true main event player. Despite any supposed breaks she received along the way, no one can deny she had the “it” factor.
Very few Superstars actually possess that factor and Charlotte is definitely one of them. Her rise to the top may not have always been easy. She needed polishing and more importantly, she needed time. But nearly three years after her main roster debut, it’s obvious that Charlotte is right where WWE wants her to be.
But in order for her to excel, she must have viable opponents. A top protagonist is only as good as the antagonists that surround her. Charlotte needs a rogue’s gallery that threatens her very existence. Without them, she is not as strong. WWE knows this and fans of Charlotte’s father know this as well.
Ric Flair was only as strong as the men that challenged him every week in the NWA. Flair was perhaps the greatest of all time but without a powerhouse like Dusty Rhodes, where would he have been? The same was true of Ricky Steamboat, Sting, Magnum TA, Barry Windham, Roddy Piper and many others.
The Nature Boy was a one-of-a-kind talent but it was the competition around him that pushed him to be the best in the business. Without the strength of the roster under him, Ric’s reputation as the greatest of all time perhaps never would have been built.
Of course Charlotte has had her share of opponents over the past few years but it’s not the same thing. She needs quality workers who can push her to her limits and beyond. The more she works with that type of talent, the better she gets. The best example of that was certainly her most heated rival, Sasha Banks.
Banks and Flair made magic together. There is just no other way to describe it. They complemented each other in every way and they made each other better the longer they feuded. It was a great ride for them and they can revisit it any time. They will always have chemistry and it will always work. But Charlotte needs a variety of opponents and those opponents must include new faces. Now she has that.
Billie Kay and Peyton Royce dismantled Charlotte on SmackDown. They made a statement at her expense and they were instantly elevated in the eyes of the fans. After all, if they could do that kind of damage to Charlotte Flair, there’s no limit to their potential. WWE sent that exact message and fans definitely received it.
Charlotte was laid out by two fresh Superstars on their first night. They took her down and they did it with a vengeance. For the first time in a long time, Charlotte looked human. She looked beatable. For one brief moment, she seemed to fall from the pedestal she had worked so hard to attain. But she owned that moment because this is about her.
Kay and Royce will benefit from this. They came in with a bang and they have a generous amount of spotlight to work in because of it. Now it’s up to them. If they gel together the way they did in NXT and if they keep working hard on SmackDown Live, they should do great things. Charlotte Flair will be there to help guide the process along.
The IIconics have a lot of pressure on them now. The top female Superstar in the entire company laid down to get them over. Of course Charlotte did that not only for them; she did it for herself as well. She understands the importance of building the women’s division and she knows that more talents equal more opportunities for her to grow as well.
