WrestleMania Weekend: Can’t-miss matches outside of the WWE
Kenny Omega vs. Cody: ROH Supercard of Honor
Kenny Omega versus Cody has been masters’ class in storytelling for professional wrestling fans and performers alike. The back and forth that everyone knew was coming since Cody joined the faction in 2016. The match at the ROH Supercard of Honor was well worth the wait and anticipation. Before the two competitors even touched each other the crowd was standing and chanting; expressing their disbelief in the magnitude of this moment. Just like the Johnny Gargano versus Tommaso Ciampa bout at NXT TakeOver; the storyline was center stage in this match.
This match gave the fans everything: run-ins, false finishes, Brandi taking bumps, Bernard, the Young Bucks and everything in between. If it wasn’t clear before, it is clear now that Cody enjoys playing the heel. He motioned to do his brother’s Shattered Dreams move which everyone seemed to love, only to flick off the fans before delivering the blow.
The match was properly paced from start to finish, speeding up when needed but certainly allowing for the suspense to build during some of the slow spots. One minor complaint is that both men seemed to chase after the same moves; Omega more so than Cody, which impacted the creativity behind the match. But that didn’t stop Cody from bringing out classic moves like the Alabama Slam and the vertebreaker. When referee Paul Turner got caught in the middle, everyone knew that a screwy finish was coming.
Including the Young Bucks landing an “accidental” superkick to Omega helps set the stage for what’s next in this feud. Were they really planning to hit Cody? Is Omega out of the BC? Is the Bullet Club really, “fine?” All of these questions will be answered in the coming weeks to months. But with all that said and done, Kenny Omega versus Cody on the ROH Supercard of Honor truly delivered.
