Roman Reigns

Might as well get this one out of the way first…

There’s a huge variety of reasons to consider Roman Reigns as a loser after WWE’s stay in New Orleans. And believe it or not, it’s not just WrestleMania itself that leads us to that conclusion. The whole two-day period between Mania and Raw was a time Reigns would probably like to forget.

We’ll start with WrestleMania. Ever since WrestleMania 31 three years ago, the overall plan has seemed to be “make Roman Reigns the guy in WWE.” The general assumption had been this was the year — Reigns beat both Triple H and The Undertaker in consecutive Mania main events, after all.

Welp, we know that didn’t happen. Instead, Reigns and Brock Lesnar put on one of the worst main events in recent memory. Hell, it may be one of the worst ever. The crowd wanted nothing to do with the match, so when the “swerve” ending took place it was dead silent in the Superdome. If you’re coronating a new champion — or he loses a match he was basically guaranteed to win — and the crowd reacts as this Mania crowd did, it may be time to rethink that whole “face of the company thing.”

The day after WrestleMania, news broke that the reason Brock retained was that he signed a new deal with WWE. Can’t be good news for Reigns, who had spent the build to Mania ripping on Brock’s part-time status. Since Brock wasn’t on Raw, Reigns cut a promo, but got interrupted by the returning Samoa Joe. And Joe showed up the official number one contender for the Universal Championship, punking him out pretty bad.

All in all, it was a pretty bad trip to NOLA for Reigns.
